Ring camera footage captures the disturbing encounter outside the woman’s home, which she says involved her former boyfriend following their breakup. Viewer discretion is advised.

A disturbing video circulating on social media is drawing attention to something far too many women experience: ending a relationship does not always end the danger.

According to a social media post accompanying Ring camera footage, a woman says she was physically attacked outside her Miami-area home by her former boyfriend approximately one month after their relationship ended.

The woman alleges that her ex had been stalking her following the breakup and that the incident captured on camera was the second time he had appeared at her home unannounced.

She reportedly told the account sharing her story that she had been trying to end the relationship for months. After the alleged attack, she expressed fear that even obtaining a restraining order might not be enough to make her feel safe.

Perhaps one of the most heartbreaking parts of her account was her response to people questioning what she had done to provoke the encounter.

Her answer, essentially, was simple: she broke up with him.

And that is where an important conversation needs to begin.

A Breakup Is Not Permission to Abuse Someone

No person owes another person a relationship.

You are allowed to leave.

You are allowed to change your mind.

You are allowed to stop answering calls.

You are allowed to say that a relationship is over.

And none of those decisions justify someone stalking, threatening, intimidating or physically attacking you.

For some victims of intimate-partner violence, however, leaving can be an especially dangerous period. That is why signs of escalating behavior after a breakup should not automatically be dismissed as someone simply being heartbroken or having difficulty “letting go.”

Repeated unwanted appearances at your home or workplace, following you, excessive unwanted communication, threats, monitoring your movements or refusing to accept that a relationship has ended can warrant serious attention.

If This Starts Happening to You, Document It

If you are experiencing unwanted or threatening behavior from a former partner, consider keeping records of what is happening.

Save threatening or unwanted messages. Keep screenshots. Preserve voicemails. Write down dates and times of incidents. Save security-camera footage somewhere other than only on the camera system. Tell trusted people what is happening.

If someone repeatedly appears at your home, don't assume that because nothing happened the first time, nothing will happen the next time.

Depending on the circumstances, contacting law enforcement, seeking legal advice, exploring a protective order and working with a domestic-violence advocate on an individualized safety plan may also be appropriate.

Most importantly, you do not have to confront the person yourself to prove that you aren't afraid.

Your safety is more important than winning an argument.

Pay Attention to Escalation

Friends and family should pay attention, too.

If someone tells you an ex-partner is following them, repeatedly showing up, threatening them or frightening them, don't immediately minimize it with “He just wants you back,” or “She'll eventually leave you alone.”

Listen.

Take the concern seriously.

Help the person think through practical safety measures and, when appropriate, connect with professionals who specialize in domestic violence and stalking.

The woman in this case reportedly said the experience left her emotionally devastated and no longer feeling safe where she lived. She also expressed frustration that despite yelling for help, she felt nobody came to her aid.

No woman—or man—should have to reach the point of physical violence before the people around them recognize that something is wrong.

One Message I Want Women to Remember

If you end a relationship and the other person's behavior begins making you afraid, trust that feeling enough to take precautions.

You don't have to wait for someone to hit you before you take unwanted behavior seriously.

You don't have to wait for the threats to become more specific.

And you don't have to worry about appearing dramatic when you're protecting yourself.

There is no perfect safety strategy, and responsibility for violence always belongs to the person choosing to commit it. But recognizing warning signs, documenting escalating behavior and seeking help early can give you more options.

Leaving someone is not an invitation to be followed. Saying “no” is not an invitation to be threatened. And ending a relationship is never justification for violence.

The allegations described in this article are based on the woman's account as shared in the accompanying social media post and have not been independently verified by The MissHollywoodMediaNetwork.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence in the United States, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is available 24/7 at 800-799-SAFE (7233), or by texting START to 88788. If you believe you are in immediate danger, call 911.
