Luigi Mangione Admits Killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, Pleads Guilty to Federal Charges

Luigi Mangione admitted in federal court Friday that he fatally shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, marking a dramatic turn in one of the country's most closely watched criminal cases.
Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges connected to the December 2024 killing of Thompson in Manhattan.
During his appearance in federal court on August 14, Mangione acknowledged his responsibility for Thompson's death while reading from a prepared statement.
“I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died,” Mangione told the court.
His admission represents a significant shift in a case that has generated intense national attention since Thompson was killed outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024.
What Mangione Pleaded Guilty To
While Mangione admitted killing Thompson, his federal guilty pleas were to two stalking charges involving his pursuit of the healthcare executive with the intent to kill him.
Earlier federal murder and firearms charges against Mangione were dismissed in January 2026 after a judge determined that the charges, as constructed by prosecutors, could not legally stand alongside the underlying stalking offenses.
That ruling removed the possibility of a federal death sentence.
Mangione nevertheless faces the possibility of spending the remainder of his life in federal prison.
U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett told Mangione that each of the federal counts carries a potential maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
His sentencing is scheduled for December 18, 2026.
Federal prosecutors have indicated they intend to seek a life sentence.
Mangione Addresses the Killing
Mangione spoke clearly in court as he accepted responsibility for shooting Thompson.
According to reporting from the proceeding, his prepared statement also included criticism of the American health insurance system.
Mangione's case has become extraordinarily divisive since his arrest. While public officials widely condemned Thompson's killing, Mangione also became a controversial symbol among some Americans angry over healthcare costs and insurance-company practices.
Whatever political or social debate has surrounded the case, Friday's proceeding established something that had previously remained an allegation in court: Mangione himself admitted that he shot Thompson.
Brian Thompson Was Killed Outside Manhattan Hotel
Brian Thompson, 50, headed UnitedHealth Group's UnitedHealthcare insurance business.
He was fatally shot during the early morning hours of December 4, 2024, outside a Manhattan hotel where an investor conference was scheduled to take place.
The killing triggered an extensive manhunt.
Mangione was ultimately arrested several days later in Pennsylvania.
Federal investigators alleged that Mangione had tracked Thompson and researched the insurance company's investor conference before carrying out the shooting.
The case quickly exploded beyond the courtroom, generating an enormous response across traditional media and social media.
Thompson's Family Watches From Courtroom
Members of Thompson's family were present as Mangione admitted responsibility for his death.
According to Reuters, Thompson's widow was seated in the front row of the courtroom and became emotional as Mangione acknowledged shooting her husband.
The guilty plea eliminates the need for a federal trial on the stalking charges.
However, Mangione's legal battle is not necessarily over.
What Happens to the New York Murder Case?
Mangione separately faces murder and weapons charges brought by New York state prosecutors.
He has pleaded not guilty to those charges.
Immediately following his federal guilty plea, Mangione's attorneys moved to have the state prosecution dismissed.
His lawyers argue that allowing New York to prosecute him for the same underlying conduct following his federal convictions would violate protections contained in New York's double-jeopardy law.
Mangione's state trial had been scheduled to begin with jury selection on September 8.
Whether that trial proceeds as scheduled could now depend on how the court rules on the defense's dismissal request.
Federal Sentencing Comes Next
Mangione entered his federal guilty pleas without a plea agreement guaranteeing him a particular sentence.
That means his decision to accept responsibility does not guarantee that the judge will show leniency.
Federal prosecutors have already indicated that they will seek life imprisonment.
Mangione is scheduled to return to federal court for sentencing on December 18.
For a case that has produced nearly two years of headlines, legal battles and intense public debate, Friday's proceeding represents a defining moment.
