Karmelo Anthony Assembles New Legal Team as Appeal Process Begins

Just weeks after being convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison, Karmelo Anthony's case is entering a new chapter.

A newly assembled team of appellate, civil rights, and criminal defense attorneys has announced that it will represent Anthony as he begins the appeals process following his conviction in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a Texas high school track meet in April 2025. Anthony, who was 19 at the time of sentencing, was convicted of murder on June 9, 2026, and later transferred to a Texas prison to begin serving his sentence.

A New Legal Team Takes Over

According to statements released by the Stand with Karmelo Coalition, the new legal team will conduct what it describes as a fresh and independent review of the trial record to determine whether any legal errors occurred during the proceedings. The attorneys say they will pursue every available avenue of appeal.

The team is reportedly serving on a pro bono basis and includes several well-known Texas attorneys from the fields of criminal defense, appellate law, and civil rights litigation. Attorney Russell Wilson II will serve as lead counsel. Other members of the legal team include Texas NAACP President Gary Bledsoe, Michael L. Ware, Brooke Cluse of Ben Crump Law, Sean Daredia, and Justin A. Moore

What Happens Next?

An appeal is not a new trial.

Instead, appellate attorneys review court transcripts, evidence, rulings made by the judge, jury instructions, and other aspects of the trial to determine whether legal mistakes occurred that may have affected the outcome of the case.

The legal team has emphasized that its role is to review the record and ensure that every issue supported by the evidence is fully presented before an appellate court.

At this stage, no court has overturned Anthony's conviction, and no appellate rulings have been issued.
