Nine people, including two children, have been reported dead following a shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, that prompted a police response lasting several hours Friday evening. Authorities say the suspected gunman is also dead and that the incident no longer presents a danger to the public.
According to CBS News Pittsburgh’s reporting, which cites Erie News Now and statements from authorities, officers responded to Perry Street at approximately 5 p.m. Friday, October 9. Witnesses had reported a man discharging a firearm before going inside a residence.
Two women were discovered deceased outside in the street. Additional people were found dead inside the home, where police also located the suspect with what appeared to be a gunshot injury he had inflicted on himself.
Police Clarify When the Deaths Occurred
On Saturday morning, authorities confirmed the reported death toll and said everyone who died had already been killed before officers reached the scene.
Police also clarified that there was no further gunfire after their arrival. The loud sounds heard during the response came from flash-bang devices used as part of the tactical operation.
That distinction separates the violence that preceded the police response from the sounds residents may have heard while officers were working at the location.
Investigators Have Not Announced a Motive
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah acknowledged the scale of the loss while explaining that investigators were still piecing together the circumstances.
Lorah declined to describe the details of what responding officers encountered, citing consideration for those who died and their families. He also emphasized that authorities would not offer theories about a motive or disclose information that could interfere with their work.
The information available in the supplied reporting does not identify those who died, provide the children’s ages, or establish the relationships between the people involved.
City Officials Reassure Residents
In a joint message, the City of Erie and Mayor Daria Devlin addressed the deadly incident near Seventh and Perry streets.
Their statement acknowledged the distress the news would cause throughout the community and said the situation had been brought under control. Officials confirmed that the shooter was dead and assured residents that there was no continuing public safety threat connected to the incident.
The city also expressed sympathy for the victims, their loved ones and others affected by the violence.
Governor Offers State Support
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said Saturday morning that he had spoken with Mayor Devlin and made his administration’s assistance available.
Shapiro expressed sorrow over the deaths and said he and his wife, Lori, were keeping the affected loved ones and the Erie community in their prayers.
Further Information Expected
The reporting provided for this article listed a city and police briefing scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, October 10. Investigators had not yet explained what led to the shooting in the information available at the time of that report.
As families face this devastating loss, key questions remain unanswered. Authorities have said their priority is establishing what happened without releasing speculation or compromising the investigation.
