Supermodel, television personality, and America's Next Top Model creator Tyra Banks is taking legal action against Netflix, alleging that the streaming giant manipulated her appearance in a recent documentary series and unfairly portrayed her as the villain in the story.

According to court filings, Banks has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, the producers behind the documentary Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model, and others involved with the project. She claims that a lengthy interview she participated in was selectively edited in a way that distorted her comments and created a false narrative about her role in some of the show's most controversial moments.

At the center of the lawsuit is a three-and-a-half-hour interview Banks says was reduced to approximately 16 minutes in the final documentary. According to the complaint, important portions of her responses—including moments where she allegedly took responsibility for past decisions and controversies connected to the show—were omitted from the final version viewers saw.

Banks argues that the documentary presented viewers with a misleading version of events and falsely implied she knowingly ignored or minimized serious concerns raised by former contestants. Her lawsuit accuses the filmmakers of using selective editing, omission of context, and what the complaint describes as "manipulation" to create a more dramatic storyline.

The documentary, which premiered on Netflix earlier this year, revisits the legacy of America's Next Top Model and includes criticism from former contestants, industry insiders, and former collaborators who reflected on their experiences with the groundbreaking reality competition series.

Banks is reportedly seeking damages for harm to her reputation, lost business opportunities, and emotional distress. The lawsuit also requests a jury trial. Netflix has not publicly commented on the allegations and had not filed a response in court at the time many reports were published.

The legal battle has reignited conversations about reality television, documentary filmmaking, and the power of editing. For years, former contestants on reality shows have claimed producers can shape storylines through editing choices. Now, Banks herself is making a similar argument—claiming that footage was edited in a way that fundamentally changed how viewers perceived her.

Whether the courts ultimately agree remains to be seen, but the case is already generating headlines and raising broader questions about where storytelling ends and misrepresentation begins.

Why This Story Matters

For decades, Tyra Banks built a brand around empowerment, fashion, and entertainment. Now, she says a documentary intended to examine her show's legacy instead damaged her reputation. The lawsuit could become a closely watched case involving documentary editing, celebrity image rights, and media accountability.
