"This photograph was taken in 2000—years before the thirteen-year season that would ultimately change my life."

Long before I understood that life moves in seasons. Looking back now, I see a young woman who had no idea the challenges ahead would one day become the foundation of her strength.

WHEN A SEASON FEELS LIKE YOUR ENTIRE LIFE

There was a season in my life that lasted from 2006 until 2019.

Thirteen years.

Thirteen years of setbacks, uncertainty, loss, rebuilding, disappointment, difficult decisions, and learning how to keep moving forward even when I had no idea what tomorrow would look like.

When you're living through a season that long, it doesn't feel like a season.

It feels like your life.

You stop asking when the storm will pass because eventually you begin to wonder if this is simply what life is going to be.

I know that feeling because I lived it.

Looking back now, I realize something I couldn't see then.

Those thirteen years were never meant to define me.

They were preparing me.

THE NOISE INSIDE THE STORM

During those years, I wasn't just carrying the weight of what I was experiencing.

I was carrying the weight of knowing people were talking.

Somehow, people who weren't living my life knew pieces of my story. They knew I was struggling. They knew things weren't going well.

Looking back, I often wondered why people who weren't even part of my everyday life knew so much about one of the hardest seasons I had ever experienced.

At first, it hurt.

Not because life wasn't already difficult enough, but because while I was trying to survive, it seemed as though some people were more interested in discussing my storm than understanding it.

THE CHATTER NEVER STOPPED

Then life changed.

Not overnight.

Not all at once.

One lesson.

One decision.

One day at a time.

I healed.

I grew.

I rebuilt.

Today, I'm living in one of the most peaceful seasons of my life.

I'm blessed beyond measure.

I'm grateful.

I'm thriving in ways I once prayed for.

Ironically...

The chatter never stopped.

The only thing that changed was the subject.

People still have something to say.

Some admire.

Some support.

Some gossip.

Some criticize.

Some wonder how you made it through what they thought would break you.

And people don't understand that.

They don't understand that while they were talking...

You were learning.

While they were watching...

You were adapting.

While they were forming opinions...

You were becoming the person your future required.

WHAT THE HARD YEARS REALLY TAUGHT ME

A lot of us don't understand our rough seasons while we're living through them.

We look at them as punishment.

As failure.

As evidence that life isn't fair.

We ask ourselves...

"Why me?"

What we don't realize is that those difficult seasons become part of us.

They become part of our DNA.

Part of our testimony.

Part of our story.

Years later, while you're living in one of the best seasons of your life, you'll find yourself reaching back into those difficult years—not because you want to relive them, but because the lessons you learned there help you navigate the blessings you're living now.

You appreciate peace because you've lived through chaos.

You appreciate stability because you've survived uncertainty.

You appreciate joy because you've cried enough tears to recognize it when it finally arrives.

Those difficult years never leave you.

They become wisdom.

They become resilience.

They become quiet reminders that you've already survived what once felt impossible.

A Moment Before the Storm — Circa 2001-Looking at this photograph today, I don't see someone who had it all figured out. I see a woman standing on the edge of a thirteen-year season that would challenge her, humble her, and ultimately prepare her for a life filled with gratitude, peace, and purpose.

BUILDING MY OWN TABLE

I've also learned something else.

Sometimes you'll still be the topic of conversations you've purposely removed yourself from.

The people.

The situations.

The environments.

You've walked away.

You've protected your peace.

You've closed the chapter.

Yet somehow your name still finds its way into the room.

And people don't understand that either.

They don't understand why you chose peace over proving a point.

They don't understand why you stopped explaining yourself.

They don't understand why you no longer respond.

They don't understand how you kept going.

Sometimes they simply can't understand why you... and not them.

The truth is...

They don't have to understand.

Your journey wasn't assigned to them.

It was assigned to you.

I didn't wait for someone to invite me to a better table.

I built my own.

A table where peace has a permanent seat.

A table where safety lives.

A table where healing is protected.

A table where growth is celebrated instead of questioned.

A table where I no longer have to apologize for protecting my peace.

Pictured here with two of my three sons, this photograph reminds me that while life tested me, my responsibility to my children never changed. They were, and always will be, part of the reason I refused to give up.

YOUR STORM IS NOT YOUR STORY

If I could survive thirteen years of uncertainty, I can survive whatever season comes next.

That's what those years gave me.

Not fear.

Confidence.

Because I already know what it feels like to rebuild.

If you're reading this while you're in one of the hardest seasons of your life, I want you to remember something.

This is a season.

Not your identity.

Not your ending.

Don't spend this chapter asking only, "Why me?"

Ask yourself instead,

"What is this season teaching me that I'll need later?"

Because one day you'll discover that the experiences you wished away became the very experiences that prepared you for the life you've been praying for.

The storm wasn't sent to define you.

It was sent to prepare you.

One day you'll look around and realize you've built something beautiful.

Not because life was always easy.

But because you refused to let your hardest season become your final destination.

"The rough seasons weren't there to keep you down. They were there to show you exactly what you were made of."
I am who I am. I went through what I went through... and I'm HERE.
I am who I am. I went through what I went through... and I'm HERE.
